To say that this is one handsome boy is an understatement, his hair, those eyes, gorgeous!  He was wide awake and didn't want to miss a moment of his session.  Such a doll! My Boys-Exploring MassMOCA | Amherst Child and Family Portrait Photographer https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2018/1/my-boys-exploring-massmoca-amherst-child-and-family-portrait-photographer Last summer, my boys and I explored MassMOCA with a friend and her boys.  We had a blast, though my youngest had a hard time not touching the exhibits. (He's very tactile.)  We had a lovely time and I can't wait to take them again to see the VR exhibition!  (Maybe I can even convince my Hubs to go!)

Don't forget them as they grow! | Amherst Family photographer https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2018/1/dont-forget-them-as-they-grow Babies, oh my, the sweetness of them!  When we, parents think of hiring a professional photographer for portraits of our children, we often focus on those newborn moments and that first birthday.  And who can blame us?  Those developmental milestones are a big deal, that first year of baby's life you feel like a success!  You did it!!! One whole year, of caring for this ever changing being that flipped your life upside down in the most wonderful way imaginable! (I know my oldest son's first birthday party was for him, but it was definetely for me a little bit, I couldn't believe I had mothered him, without breaking him for a year. A YEAR!)

Then before you know it they are walking, then running and the last thing on your mind as you collapse into bed after a day of "no's" and tantrums and potty accidents and snuggles and hugs and mud and bugs and laughs is setting up a portrait session.  But believe me, there will be a time when that baby is climbing into the school bus for kindergarten and you will think, "Oh, when did my baby get so big?"  All the milestones are important, first steps, first birthdays, first days at elementary, middle and high school.  Don't forget them as they grow, that tween will be a teen before you know it, that toddler will be in kindergarten in the blink of an eye.  Let's get together, let me document these fleeting days. I can't wait to get to know you and your family.

Grandparents+Grandchildren portraits {natick family photographer} https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/8/grandparents-grandkids-moving-day-portraits-natick-family-photographer Oh, how I wish we never had to say good bye....At the end of July, Grandparents, Jim and Anne said good-bye to their house in Natick of nearly thirty years.  The house where they raised their children, visited with friends and family.  The house where they met their children's future spouses, hosted bridal and baby showers.  The house where their grandchildren came to play in the backyard, drive trains and bikes in the basement and trick-or-treat every year for seven years.  Their house was always just so,  perfectly spotless and always warm and welcoming.

So while they had to say goodbye to their house, their children and grandchildren had to say good bye to it and them as well. We had all the feels that day.  All of them.

Vibe Drums https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/3/vibe-drums I recently received and e-mail from my dad asking me if I could photograph our Vibe Drum for his website (he manufactures and sells them). So what did I do? I took our beautiful drum out for a walk and a photoshoot.  I love this drum, we play it every night at bedtime and anytime we need a little soul soothing.

(Our next one will be the stardust finish in a different scale...I just love that finish!)

Bath portraits https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/2/bath-portraits Tub time portraits are some of my faves.  Not only does the bath calm my guys down but I get pictures of their lovely, lily white skin.  Wyguy was game for some tub time portraits and we had loads of fun being silly, with him directing me what to photograph.  This boy is such a card!

Kids, am I right? https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/2/kids-am-i-right One of the things about having a child (that no one tells you), is that suddenly your life is full of toys.  I mean, just brimming with toys!  I remember that right around the time that the toy overflow started, I could not have been more annoyed.  It felt like everywhere I looked there was another new toy.  And then...then he started to outgrow some of his toys. He stopped carrying that well worn, loved Mickey around with him everywhere.  Duplos were replaced with Legos, Little People were replaced with superheroes just as onesies were exchanged for shirts and Pull-ups for underwear. When those things happened, well, I became a little melancholy for those old toys that marked my children's interests at different stages of their growing lives. I realized that photographing those well loved toys were just as important to documenting the process of childhood and growing up as photographing my actual children.   So, a project began and somewhere in there I came to find that I just love, love, love, photographing my children's toys.  Especially, when they request that I make their toy "do" something, like drive along the street or "be in space", or arrest the bad guy.  Yep, children's toys, who knew?

Baby L's Six Month Session https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/1/baby-ls-six-month-session Oh, babies, always so darn cute!  The thing is we think about newborn sessions and we think about first birthday/cake smash sessions, but what happens to the rest of that first year?  Snapshots, a million of them, sure...but what about a session?  That first year goes fast and when you're in it, you are really in the zone, before you know it, you're going from size 1 diapers to thinking about potty training methods.  it's fast, I'm telling you, it's fast.

In that vein, I had a photo session with Baby L, who is about six months old and just happens to be my adorable nephew.  My Sister-in-law didn't have any professional shots done when he was a newborn, so when she came out for a visit I set up a session.  Look at this baby!  I almost love this age more than newborns, it's just so easy to get happy faces out babies this age.  (That said, I looooove squishy sleepy newborns!)

Here he is Baby L in all his cuteness!

Shelburne Falls and the Bridge of Flowers https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2016/1/shelburne-falls-and-the-bridge-of-flowers My husband and I have a little love affair with Shelburne Falls.  We walk the Bridge of Flowers and wander through the town with our boys imagining buying a little home there and what fun it would be to walk to the Trolley Museum on the weekends or see the trains rattle by during the week.  I think about strolling the Bridge of Flowers in every season, at different times of day, just to watch the light change and the flowers come and go.  We were able to go the the festival of lights there this year, just after Thanksgiving.  We rode the trolley at night, saw the parade and had an ice cream dinner (sort of).  These images are some of my favorites from that night. Two Beautiful Brides {Amherst LGBT Wedding Photographer} https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/12/two-beautiful-brides Jaymie and Alicia were the most amazing brides with such a beautiful LGBT wedding.  They managed to be beautiful, funny, poised and so connected to each other throughout their wedding day.  These women emanate love for each other at every moment, every time I see them.  Their venue, the Quont Quont Farm, was just spectacular.  The orchard was gorgeous, a bit chilly and a little breezy but they were troopers, as were their bridesmaids (and bridesmen)! I am so honored that I was able to photograph this stunning wedding day of theirs.

Brianna and Kevin https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/10/brianna-and-kevin In approximately one year Brianna and Kevin will walk down the aisle, slip rings on each other's fingers and declare to the world, "I love you.  You are it for me, I know the road may occasionally be treacherous, but I want to traverse it with you.  Treacherous or smooth, easy or difficult, I will walk this path called Life with you."

Our engagement session was at the very place they will be declaring their eternal and undying love for one another, and I could not be happier for them both!  I am so lucky to work with them and be able to document their day together.  Here are just a few images from their session.

End of Summer https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/9/end-of-summer “The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.”

Molly Springfield, Massachusetts Senior Session https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/8/molly-springfield-massachusetts-senior-session Oh, Miss Molly, I could write about how pretty or beautiful you are, but you are far more than that to be weighted down with those words.  You are bold and fierce, you are quick to laugh with a wicked brain that is smart yet humble. Don't let your spirit be defined by your beautiful shell (even if it is really lovely!!)

I love senior sessions, you guys, I just do.  Something about that transitional and defining moment of one's life.  That moment where you aren't a child anymore but aren't quite an adult either. It's magical.  I especially love senior sessions when I get to spend them with people like Molly.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Summer https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/7/summer Oh, this summer!  How quickly it has flown by!  This summer we played, laughed, got sick, (the phrase "afflicted with the Kid Plague" may have been bandied about), and said good-bye to a best friend.   My oldest has a hard time making friends his own age, he often gravitates towards older kids and adults, not really enjoying the company of his peers, that is until he met R.  R is a brilliant boy, math, reading, complex thinking, he amazes me. R and CG became friends very quickly and were inseparable in kindergarten, they are both self-proclaimed Titanic experts and will read or watch anything about the Titanic.  Ask either of them anything about the ship (or the sinking) and they immediately have the answer.  Well, we found out at the end of the school year that R was moving away to another state in the south.  So CG and R had one final playdate at the pool and said their good byes.  R will be missed by me, but he will be missed the most by his fellow Titanic Expert, CGM.

Tony is 70! https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/3/tony-is-70 A couple of Saturdays ago, I had the pleasure of photographing a 70th birthday party. There were so many things that I was hyper-focused on, light conditions, space, backgrounds, and of course a family portrait of approximately fifty people! FIFTY!! Indoors!!! (I nailed it, by the way.) But once I met this lovely family, I began to relax and really enjoy this work I do. This family and all extended relatives were absolutely delightful, this was one of the best events I've ever worked on and the birthday boy  and his wife were just fantastic.  It's always so wonderful to see a couple that is still able to make each other laugh after all their years together. Happy birthday, Tony! 70th birthday

#365 https://www.jcattphoto.com/blog/2015/2/-365 Oh, this project.  I love it and yet I also sometimes feel stymied by what to photograph next.  Should I do stills, should I focus on my boys?  What about the chaos, the mess, the toys?  What is "worthy" of an image?  It's a joy and a struggle. I think the constant snow and freezing temperatures are making it difficult for me to get out and shoot.  Regardless, I am holding myself to photographing every day.  If I shoot something that I'm not happy with one day, I do two the next, it's a little compromise with myself.  Here are some of my more recent images, and, of course, you can find them all in their gallery.
